Manual Phased Array technique for Pipe Weld Inspection in Nuclear Power Plants

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has the charter to help insure member utilities that their plants are run safely and efficiently. Member utilities share the costs of developing the techniques and technologies to achieve this goal by funding EPRI for very specific technical areas; and one of these areas is nondestructive testing (NDT).

The Phasor XS phased array system, probes and procedures have been qualified to meet the EPRI Qualification in a method defined in section XI of ASME code. We now supply a special PDI probe kit. Through continuous testing and qualification, the Phasor XS has been issued a Performance Demonstration Qualification Summary (PDQS) by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). As a result, the Phasor XS is qualified for manual Phased Array procedure for detection, and length sizing of ferritic and austentic piping, including Intergranular Stress Corrosion Cracking (IGSCC) for the nuclear power industry.

Composite inspection with Hardwater Phased Array probe

This probe design allows quick and easy scanning on composite surfaces. The encoder sampling interval can be adjusted to save C-scans (TOPVIEW) of 8” long all the way up to 90” if so desired.  It however decreases the POD on smaller defects.  When used exclusively with water as a couplant, the probe allows for very near surface inspections such as delaminations.

The bubbler box has a built in tube connection for water feeding of the probe face. It can also be used in a totally immersed condition. The use of water as a couplant also lowers the actual 5MHZ frequency of the probe down to 3 MHz. When used with the water feed tube, it allows to inspect vertical surfaces that do not require to be immersed.

Composite inspection with Roto-Array probe

The power of an immersion C-scan in the palm of your hand!


A quick and easy way to inspect composites in the Aerospace industry, or to inspect wind turbine blades in the energy sector. Other inspections for aluminum skins and other metal structures for corrosion or flaw detection. The special rubber wheel conforms to curved surfaces for maximum scan coverage.  A simple mist of water is sufficient as a couplant agent on the part’s surface. You can inspect in B-scan or encoded C-scan mode, ideal for various nondestructive testing applications, including voids, delaminations and disbonds.

GE Measurement and Control independently manufactures the RotoArray™ with connectors that mate with others phased array instruments. We work closely with key accounts in developing, testing, and bringing to market these exciting new products. There are two basic designs available; the Phasor XS version, and the Advanced version for other units that use Hypertronics and Ipex connectors.  The Advanced version has three remote switches which allow you to remotely start scans, stop scans, and increment scans on capable instruments.

Railroad wheel profile inspection


Combining GE’s Phasor XS portable phased array flaw detector with a bubbler assembly containing a 64 element phased array probe, the user can display and capture a TopView C-Scan image of a wheel tread inspection.

Conventional ultrasonic inspection relies on individual probes with a fixed geometry and ultrasonic focus or a series of such probes mechanically manipulated to scan a region of interest. Ultrasonic inspection with Phased Array uses a single multiple element probe to achieve the same application result without the need for mechanical probe manipulation. This is made possible because the individual elements within the probe are driven by the electronics in sets that can be electronically scanned and focused at different ultrasonic depths in near real time. Phased Array provides full volumetric inspection of the area of interest on a rail wheel at higher throughput and without the complex mechanical motion of a conventional inspection system.

The unique DM phased array probes developed for corrosion monitoring are multi-element arrays which provide comprehensive linear coverage AND excellent near surface resolution.

Corrosion Detection, Imaging and Digital Measurement with Phasor CV/DM

The Phasor CV/DM combines a phased array imaging device and a conventional flaw detector into one instrument, with a dual-receive phased array probe which allows significantly increased confidence in corrosion inspection data. The Phasor CV/DM provides a simple and elegant method for reliably monitoring corrosion, identifying corrosion pits, displaying meaningful images, and providing digital measurements.

It does this by using a specially developed phased array compression transducer, which provides 28 adjacent and discrete inspection probes to allow extensive linear coverage. This ensures that even the smallest corrosion pit is identified and evaluated. The corrosion software specially developed for the Phasor CV/DM displays results in an understandable and useful way, both in terms of digital data and imagery. An optional positional encoder provides precise linear location information for each scan.

The New Corrosion Software provides the ability to select and display:

  • Thickness measurement in each beam
  • Minimum thickness in a current view
  • Minimum thickness recorded during a current scan, since the last re-set.
  • The ability to freeze a Top View
  • The availability of a conventional A-scan to confirm readings

While it is recognized that phased array technology is becoming more widespread and popular within various industries, it has not yet been specifically addressed by the AWS. It is now possible to align the Phasor XS with the current methodology prescribed in Clause 6, Part F, of the AWS D1.1, 2008 Code. This is achievable due to the well-established fact that an array transducer with the same physical properties of size, shape, and frequency, as a conventional monolithic transducer, will have identical acoustic properties.

We have a guideline procedure for the Phasor XS utilizing the sectorial and A-scan views. For the detection and interpretation of discontinuities in groove type welds and the associated heat affected zones (HAZ). Applicable part thickness range is from 5/16” to 8” inclusive of material thickness as prescribed by Part F of the AWS D1.1 – 2008 code.

Alan Hunscott, (shown here) Technical Support Manager of GE’s Inspection Technologies product line, explains how the equipment works, “Our Phasor XS uses phased array ultrasonics, the same technology as that used in medical diagnosis and foetal scanning. This relies on the computer-controlled excitation of each element in a multi-element probe to produce a focused, steerable, ultrasound beam. As a result, a single phased array probe, with say 64 elements can perform those inspection tasks normally requiring large numbers of conventional probes or multiple scanning passes. First of all this means that scanning is faster and the possibility of detection is much greater. However, perhaps the greatest benefit in this application is the presentation of the image. Unlike conventional ultrasonic images which are difficult to interpret, phased array produces simple images which are readily understood even by laymen with the minimum of training.”
